I understand that as I do the same while I’m dripping sweat running on the treadmill, but like I said he’s on a recumbent bike, which I hate anyway…but anyway I think expertvillage’s videos suck anyway…oh well…lol

    1feistydst, I’m …
1feistydst, I’m sure that’s true, but losing weight does require a certain amount of effort. If someone is relaxed enough to be reading a magazine I assume that they could probably afford to put some extra effort into it. I have an upright bike and could rest a magazine on the handlebars and pedal less hard, but I prefer to put a towel there to soak up the pools of sweat running down my arms and off my forehead as I do a Spinervals workout :o )

  7. 1feistydst says:

    @Gisburne2000 why …
@Gisburne2000 why wouldn’t you be able to read a magazine while sitting down on a recumbent bike? I can understand if you are on a treadmill, elliptical or even a upright bike, but I would think it would be quite simple on a recumbent bike.

    *45 minutes of soft …
*45 minutes of soft pedaling while reading a magazine that is.

Using music will help you – put together some tracks which suit the workout you want to do and pedal along with the music. For me it’s Iron Maiden but that may be a little fast for some people!

You WILL lose weight from your middle (and all over), though it won’t tone your abs or anything other than your legs.

Last thing: don’t get a cheap and nasty bike, spend a little and it will be worth it.

If you can read a …
If you can read a magazine while you’re pedaling, you’re not doing it right. Put some effort into it! 20-30 minutes of hard work 3-4 times per week is going to give you better results than 45 minutes 5-6 times per week.

    … I’d suggest to …
… I’d suggest to buy your own recumbent exercise bike. I’m paranoid about MRSA infections in gyms.

Moreover, you own bike is always available. That WILL increase your consistency.

You can get a serviceable bike for around $300… less if you are a small person. My bike was about $1500.00, but I’m 6′ 6″ and 245lb. It was worth every dime. And really, gym fees can easily amount to that much… and I probably wouldn’t go that often.

    I love my recumbent …
I love my recumbent exercise bike, but I don’t care for the preset programs. I like to manually operate the resistance.

The best thing is that I can watch television (sans commercials) and movies while exercising. I’ve found that watching a television show makes you lose track of the time that you’re exercising. It doesn’t get boring. When I used to run, even with an iPod, I was always bored. Not so with the recumbent bike… plus, I can use it at 3:30 AM in the middle of a snow storm!

I set a goal for myself to eat ONLY vegetables, hard boiled eggs, fish, chicken, beef and drink only low fat milk and water and I exercised every other day, and did 1 hour of cardio after every exercise session, and I lost about 15 lbs for 1-2 months! The trick is consistency! Afterwords I started eating normally again, and I just maintained the weight. No diet or anything. But I do continue to do basic home exercises just to stay in shape.
